CLAIM:
On Tuesday, December 29, 2020, fact-checkers at Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) spotted a broadcast claiming the distribution of N30,000 N-Power grant to Nigerians.
The broadcast with an accompanied link claimed beneficiaries of the will be determined from those selected.
FACT:
Investigations carried out by CDD fact-checkers showed the claim to be false and purely another method used by online scammers to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.
Checks carried out by CDD revealed the link provided looks is fake and not from the Federal Government’s approved N-Power Programme
The link provided by the suspected scammers would also require that applicants provide details such as account number among others.
The applicants are also expected to share the link to 12 other people on WhatsApp– a pattern which CDD has noticed is used by internet fraudsters to lure mostly unemployment Nigerians to their “scheme”.
According to details on the application form, applicants can only access their approved funds after the link have been sent to the 12 people.
Also, although effort to get an official statement from N-Power management, CDD’s check on the platforms used by the initiative showed no link for a grant application have been shared by the government.
CONCLUSION:
The claim on N-power free N30,000 grant to beneficiaries is false and another fraudulent method by online scammers to defraud people. The CDD has produced several fact-checks which various online scams that fraudsters have adopted to lure people into providing their personal information.
CDD is urging Nigerians to always verify the authenticity of stories before sharing them.
