FACT CHECK: Viral image does not show Peter Obi eating Isiewu with ‘Biafra beer’

Adamu Garba, a former presidential aspirant and member of the All Progressive Congress (APC) on Thursday, January 26, 2023, posted a picture of Peter Obi, the Labour Party Presidential candidate, eating a Nigerian delicacy alongside two bottles of Hero beer.

Adamu said Obi was having “too much pleasure” with Hero Beer, which he alleges has a Biafra logo.

The picture seen by over 600,000 accounts at the time of this report was shared alongside the caption: “Too much pleasure dey worry this wuna presidential aspirant. Double hero beer with Biafra trademark and isiewu full time.”

Verification

Using a reverse image search, we found the original image, which looks very similar to what the former presidential aspirant posted. The original image does not show Peter Obi and the drinks in the pictures are the Fearless energy drink — not Hero beer.

The image was originally posted in a tweet on January 23, 2023 — some 24 hours before it was edited and posted by Garba.

Hero Beer and Biafra logo

A side-by-side comparison between the Hero and the Biafra logo

While the logo of Hero Beer and the coat of arms of Biafra both have the image of a rising sun, there are quite a lot of differences between them.

The rising sun in Hero has three visible colours: yellow, orange, and red. The Biafra logo, on the other hand, has just two colours present; yellow and marks of black.

Also, the sun rays on Hero logo are different from that of Biafra, which is wavering. In recent times, the image on the Biafra flag has been modified with the rays straightened and the dividing lines between the sun and rays removed as seen below.

Reasons for the comparison

The name Hero: it is believed that Igbo’s affiliate the bear with those who fought during the war, especially the late leader Odumegwu Ojukwu.

The nickname ‘oh Mpa’: The nickname ‘oh Mpa’ or ‘O’mpa’ when translated to English means ‘oh my father’ or father. Father is a name usually referred to Ojukwu the leader of the Biafra struggle in the 1960’s.

A song by highlife singer Sunny Kampala with the same name serves as a tribute to the late warlord.

It is regarded as an Igbo drink: Due to the logo having similarities with Biafra, some Igbo tend to have sympathy towards the drink as such has a large market among eastern Nigerians.

Verdict

Adamu Garba’s post does not show Peter Obi eating Isiewu with bottles of Hero Beer; the original image was manipulated to push a certain narrative about the Labour Party’s presidential candidate. The actual image shows a social media influencer eating amala with two bottles of Fearless energy drink.

Summary of claim and verdict.
