Fact Check: Did the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi win 19 states in the 2023 general elections?

Claim: Peter Obi won 19 states in the just-concluded presidential elections.

Verdict: False

Context: A post on Twitter and Facebook went viral, claiming the announcement of the presidential election result by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, won the election with 19 states according to results uploaded by the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).

Verification: CDD fact-checkers verified the claim and found out that results from over 10,000 polling units had not been uploaded to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV), and it was therefore not possible to conclude that Peter Obi won the elections in 19 states. As such, the claim was misleading.

Conclusion:  Based on investigations and verifiable data, CDD fact-checkers can confirm that the claim that ‘Peter Obi won 19 states in the recently concluded presidential elections is false and misleading.
