A claim that former Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, has been appointed as the new governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has circulated online. The claim is accompanied by a video featuring Wike and Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo State.
The video, posted by NewsbySparro, has garnered over 1,900 views as of the time it was retrieved from YouTube.
This comes with the recent suspension of Godwin Emefiele as the governor of the country’s apex bank by Nigeria’s president, Bola Tinubu.

Claim: Nyesom Wike has been appointed as the new CBN governor
Verification
To verify the claim, the CDD War Room assessed the video which contains different scenes of past events.
The first scene shows the moments Wike and Makinde were responding to questions after their meeting with Tinubu in Aso Villa, Abuja. Another scene shows when Tinubu and his allies visited Wike as governor of Rivers State, ahead of the 2023 general elections.
However, none of the scenes in the video depicts that Wike has been appointed as the CBN governor. Also, no credible media outfit reported such a development.
As of the time of filing this report, Folashodun Shonubi, the former deputy governor (operations directorate), is the acting governor of the apex bank following the suspension of Emefiele, as can be seen here, here, and here.
Verdict: False
The former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has not been appointed as the new governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). The CDD War Room can confirm that Godwin Emefiele was suspended, and Folashodun Shonubi has since assumed the role of acting governor, overseeing the operations of the apex bank.
