A verified Twitter user, known for being a staunch supporter of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party(LP) in the 2023 general elections, has claimed that Bola Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was the only presidential candidate that never had 25 percent of votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Claim: Bola Tinubu of the APC is the only candidate that never had 25 per cent votes cast in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)
Verification
Bola Tinubu was one of the leading candidates among the 18 contenders in Nigeria’s presidential election held on February 25, 2023. The other notable candidates were Atiku Abubakar from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi from the Labour Party (LP), and Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
The election results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) show that only Peter Obi received more than 25 per cent of the total votes cast in the nation’s capital. Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, and Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso, among others, obtained less than 25% of the votes.
However, INEC declared Tinubu as the winner of the presidential election after polling the highest number of votes and scoring over 25 per cent of the votes cast in over 24 states. The development makes him the first president-elect since the return of democracy who did not receive up to 25 per cent of the votes in the nation’s capital.
Verdict: Misleading
CDD War Room confirms that Tinubu was not the only presidential candidate who didn’t secure 25% votes in the FCT. Conversely, his emergence makes him the only president-elect since 1999 who failed to garner 25% of votes in the nation’s capital.
