FACT CHECK: Did Tinubu vow to reduce fuel price to N100 per litre?

Social media influencer, Gossip Mill Nigeria, recently shared a video purporting to capture the moment when Bola Tinubu promised to reduce fuel price to N100 per litre if elected as Nigeria’s President.

On the verified Twitter handle of the influencer, Tinubu was quoted to have said in the video, “Fuel is N200 per litre now, once I enter and become President of Nigeria, fuel will be N100 per litre”.

This has also been circulated on Instagram, further amplifying its reach.

This is coming amidst the nationwide fuel price hike resulting from the fuel subsidy removal, which was announced by Tinubu during his inaugural speech on May 29, 2023.

Claim: Bola Tinubu promised to reduce fuel price to N100 in the viral campaign video

Verification

To confirm the veracity of the claim, the CDD War Room assessed the content of the video and here is what we found.

The 55-seconds clip shows the moment Bola Tinubu was addressing a mammoth crowd during the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign held in Ogun state on January 25, 2023.

In the video, Bola Tinubu could be heard addressing the issue of fuel price, as he said, “They talked about fuel, saying the cost would increase to N200, N500. You should stay calm, we would reduce it”.

We further traced the full video of Bola Tinubu’s speech at the campaign rally, to ascertain if he indeed promised to reduce the cost of fuel to N100 per litre. We found that he didn’t state a specific amount, as he only pledged to lower the price of fuel.

Verdict: MISLEADING

The claim that the viral video shows the moment when Bola Tinubu promised to reduce the price of fuel to N100 per litre, is misleading. The CDD War Room confirms that Tinubu only pledged to lower the cost of fuel when elected as Nigeria’s president.
