FACT CHECK: Did Buhari vote for Peter Obi as multiple TikTok videos claim?

There is a viral claim that President Muhammed Buhari of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) voted for the opposing Labour Party in the ongoing 2023 presidential elections. 

Peter obi is the presidential candidate of the Labour Party.

Multiple videos shared here, here, here and here claim to show Buhari voting for Labour Party.

In one of the videos, a young man is heard saying: “Wow, Buhari voted for Labour Party. They just showed it now. And they even dey happy.”

The video has since garnered more than 533,000 views and 4,536 shares as of the time it was retrieved from TikTok.

Ahead of today’s elections, the outgoing president Buhari attended several APC campaign events, to show support for Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the party.

Buhari cast his vote earlier today at polling unit 003 in Sarkin Yara A, Kofar Baru, Daura, Katsina State. He arrived at the PU alongside his wife, Aisha.

Claim: President Muhammadu Buhari voted for Labour Party 

Verification

Findings by the CDD Election War Room show that the claim is false.

We checked several video reports of the moment President Buhari cast his vote and saw that he voted for his party, APC.

This was captured in this video report by TVC. A picture showing the moment Buhari raised the ballot paper after voting was published in this report by TheCable. 

Bashir Ahmad, special assistant on Digital Communications to President Buhari, also shared the picture on his verified Twitter handle.

Furthermore, the APC logo is number six while that of the LP is number 11 on the ballot papers for the presidential polls. 

Verdict:

The claim that President Muhammadu Buhari cast his vote for Labour Party is false; credible reports show that he voted for his party, APC.
