On October 6, 2025, the CDD War Room received a claim from our Soldiers of Mouth (SoM) that four serving lawmakers in the Anambra State House of Assembly have joined the APC. This claim has gone viral and is coming barely a month before the Anambra governorship election, slated for November 8, 2025.
Claim: Did four lawmakers defect to the APC in Anambra State?
Verification:
The CDD War Room found that four lawmakers, serving in the Anambra State House of Assembly, defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
We found that Onyekachukwu Augustine Ike (Nnewi North) of the Young Progressive Party (YPP), Paul Obu (Orumba North) of the Labour Party (LP), Obalim Patrick Udoba (Anambra West) of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and Emma Oforka (Onitsha North) defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The defection was officially held on September 23, 2025, at the official inauguration of the party’s governorship campaign council in the state.
We found an interview granted by Chief Ifeatu Obi-Okoye, the State Chairman of APGA, confirming the defection of these lawmakers to the APC.
We also found an interview, granted by Onyekachukwu Augustine Ike, one of the defected lawmakers. He added that he, alongside three other lawmakers, joined the APC based on principle, not because of money.
This clarification was made regarding a version of the claim that says they were wooed with “a whopping fifty million (N50m)” before joining the APC.
Verdict: True
The CDD War Room can confirm that four serving members of the Anambra State House of Assembly have defected from their respective parties to the APC, ahead of the November 8 governorship election.
According to one of the lawmakers, they joined the APC based on principles and not for financial gains.
