FACT CHECK: Does this video show political violence in Isan-Ekiti hours before opening of polls in the 2026 off-cycle election?

Isaac Fayose, brother of former Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose, has shared a video on social media, claiming that it shows political violence in Isan-Ekiti just hours before the opening of polls in the ongoing June 20 governorship election in the state.

Isaac Fayose wrote, “One killed, police station torched as political violence erupts in Isan-Ekiti, a few hours to gubernatorial election. Ekiti youths are angry. Say no to rigging and intimidation. #EkitiDecides”

In the video, a building that appears to be a police station is seen being attacked by unidentified youths, while items within the facility are being burnt and destroyed.

One of the individuals in the video can be heard saying, “No more police in Isan. We don’t need police in Isan.”

Amid the ongoing election, social media bloggers and users have reshared the video with the same claim, as seen here and here

CLAIM: The video shows political violence in Isan-Ekiti hours before the opening of polls in the 2026 Ekiti off-cycle election.

VERIFICATION

The CDD War Room assessed the content of the video and conducted multiple checks to verify the claim. We found the claim to be misleading.

A news report by The Sun revealed that although the attack on the police station occurred in Isan-Ekiti, Oye Local Government Area, on the eve of the off-cycle election, it was allegedly a retaliation for the fatal shooting of a young man by a police officer.

“Although the circumstances surrounding Friday’s shooting could not be immediately ascertained, Sun Online learnt that it developed from an altercation over a football-related dispute,” the report partly stated.

A witness account shared in a Facebook post also indicated that the incident stemmed from an alleged case of police brutality and was not politically motivated.

VERDICT: MISLEADING

The claim that the viral video shows political violence in Isan-Ekiti hours before the commencement of polls, resulting in one death, is MISLEADING.

The CDD War Room can confirm that the incident involved an attack on a police facility, allegedly triggered by the fatal shooting of an unidentified young man by a police officer and not by election-related political violence.
