FACT CHECK: Does Video Show Robbery After Protest On Bode Thomas Surulere Street?

On July 28, 2024, a video went viral across social media with the caption “BODE THOMAS SURULERE YESTERDAY…. THIS WHAT THEY PLANNED TO DO DURING THE PROTEST…”

Attached to the video is a 2 minutes, 12 seconds long video allegedly showing the Bode Thomas Surulere street in Lagos, Nigeria. 

A similar version of the video is trending on X (formerly Twitter) with the claim that “This is Bode Thomas Surulere where armed robbery took place yesterday it maybe due to the hardship ,  but I don’t want the children of the roasted 🌽 to use it as propaganda that it’s from any protest.”

As of the time of this report, the Tweet has garnered over 305,000 views.

Claim: Does this video shows recent robbery after protest on Bode Thomas street, Surulere?

Verification: 

The CDD War Room, using a Google Reverse Image Search found that the the first time the video surfaced online was on October 23, 2020. It was a video recording on Instagram that was screen-recorded and shared across social media. The original version of the video was uploaded on October 23, 2020 and can be found on Youtube

We found that video attached to the tweet was retrieved from the Bode Thomas Surulere street of Lagos and the destructions in the video were due to the hoodlum attacks and violence that followed the “Endsars” protest across the country. 

Contrary to the claim, the Bode Thomas Surulere street of Lagos is calm and business activities are ongoing, as at the time of this report. 

Verdict: False

The CDD War Room found that the video attached to the viral claim dates back to October 2020. We found that the claim is false as the video showed the destructions following the “Endsars” protest of October 2020 and not robbery attacks on the Bode Thomas Surulere Street of Lagos, Nigeria.
