A video making the rounds on various social media platforms is shared alongside claims that it shows election day violence from Nigeria’s ongoing presidential election.
Two men on motorcycles are seen wielding guns and scattering boxes in the video; one of the men appears to have been shot to death by military officers.
This user shared it in response to a claim that ballot boxes are being snatched in Kogi State.
Another social media user who shared the video, however, insinuated that it originated from the Eastern part of the country, the user, who shared it with the free #MaziNnamdiKanu hashtag said “After the warning people still got mind to involve in violence on the election day”.
“Even if you are frustrated in Nigeria, exercise your grievance in a peaceful way not with firearms,” the Twitter user wrote.
VERIFICATION
Running multiple Google reverse image searches of still images taken from the video, CDD Election War Room discovered that the video is from Ghana.
A subsequent search led us to YouTube, where we discovered that the video was taken during a police drill at Ghana’s Eastern Regional Headquarters two years ago.
The exercise was held in preparation for Ghana’s 2020 presidential election.
Verdict
The video alleged to have originated from a Nigerian election is false.
