FACT CHECK: Did INEC Chairman say his life is at risk as Dino Melaye claims?

The official spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dino Melaye, has claimed that the chairman of the Independent National Election Commission (INEC), professor Mahmood Yakubu had ‘cried out’ that his life is at risk. 

Melaye made this claim on his Twitter page in the early hours of March 6, 2023, and captioned it ‘please go to court.’

This was following the announcement of the winner of Nigeria’s presidential elections by INEC, and other political parties, including PDP, have challenged the results and instituted a court action in that regard.

Verification: 

The Chief Press Secretary/Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, debunked this claim in the early hours of March 7, 2023, on his official Twitter page.

“At no time did the INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu say that his life was at risk. The public should disregard the fake narrative being circulated by mischief makers,” Oyekanmi tweeted.

Verdict

The claim that the INEC chairman has said his life was in danger is false. The Chief Press Secretary/Media Adviser to the INEC Chairman debunked this claim through his official Twitter page on March 7, 2023.
