A claim received via the Check by Meedan tool states that a court of law has ordered the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to arrest the immediate past chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, for contempt.
This is coming days after Yakubu bowed out of the Commission, handing over to the oldest serving national commissioner, May Agbamuche-Mbu, who now serves as the acting chairperson of the election umpire.
Claim: Court ordered the IGP to arrest the immediate past INEC Chair, Mahmood Yakubu, for Contempt
Verification
The CDD War Room checked for credible media reports to confirm the authenticity of the claim, and here is what we found.
A Federal High Court in Osogbo reportedly issued an order dated October 7, 2025, in which it asked the IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, to arrest the former INEC Chair for contempt of court.
The court order followed a lawsuit filed by the Action Alliance (AA), in which it was alleged that INEC and Yakubu failed to comply with a previous court judgment.
According to reports, the previous ruling had directed INEC to upload the names of the AA’s National Chairman, Adekunle Rufai Omoaje, and other National Executive Committee members to its official portal. While some names were reportedly uploaded, the AA claimed that Omoaje’s name was still missing, which led to the contempt proceedings.
According to the latest court order, the IGP was mandated to initiate contempt proceedings against Yakubu within seven days, as the court also imposed costs of ₦100,000 against INEC and the ex-INEC chair. This was according to reports from The Guardian and Daily Post, as seen here and here.
Verdict: TRUE
CDD War Room can verify that a Federal High Court in Osogbo ordered the IGP to arrest INEC’s ex-chair for contempt of court proceedings.
