FACT CHECK: Does Video Show INEC Officer Altering Results In Edo Governorship Election?

Since the September 21 governorship election in Edo State, a video has gone viral with the claim that an Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officer was caught on tape altering the election results. 

According to the video, attached to a news platform and trending across Whatsapp and X (formerly Twitter), the alleged INEC officer is seen copying some blurry figures from one sheet to another with the aid of a torch light. In the background is a loud noice coming from a megaphone. 

Claim: Video shows INEC officer altering results of the Edo governorship election

Verification: 

The CDD War Room found that the video first appeared online on September 25, 2024 when an X user (formerly Twitter) posted it. 

We found that a similar version of the video was attached to a full blog that been published here, here and here.    

We can confirm that the video is real, however, the video is not clear enough to show what the person is copying from the first sheet to another sheet. 

In addition, there are no evidence in the video to show that the person therein is an INEC official and that what he was copying is being altered in the second sheet. 

Verdict: NO EVIDENCE

The CDD War Room found no evidence from the viral video showing that the person is an INEC officer. We could not ascertain whether what the person is copying is an election result and that he was altering what is on the original paper to the second sheet.
