A video making the rounds on social media has claimed that officials of the Department of State Services (DSS), have recovered money from the house of embattled governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.

The video, which has garnered over 363 thousand views and over a thousand comments, shows Dollar bills being removed from a suitcase and counted.

The video surfaced on social media after the former CBN governor was suspended by Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the president of Nigeria. He was subsequently arrested by the Department of State Service (DSS) on June 9, 2023.

The former CBN governor’s suspension is a sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector. During his inauguration on May 29, Bola Tinubu announced plans for a monetary policy house cleaning.

CLAIM: DSS officials recover stash of dollar bills from Emefiele’s house. 

VERIFICATION: The CDD War Room fact checked this claim and found that the video was from April 2019 when stacks of dollar bills were found in the house of former president of Sudan, Omar El-Bashir. The money, ‘which was stashed in 100 and 50 dollar bills, was found hidden in  suitcases in Bashir’s house in Khartoum, Sudan.’ 

The viral video posted on Youtube, showed Sudanese officials removing the cash from suitcases. 

Verdict: FALSE

The claim that DSS officials discovered, and were recovering monies from the house of former CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, is false. The video is from April, 2019 when cash worth thousands of dollars was found in the house of former Sudanese leader, Omar El-Bashir.
