On July 1, 2024, an online news platform, Sahara Reporters posted on their verified X page (formerly Twitter), that “ Flooding In Our Edo State Office Has Affected 4000 BVAS Machines – Electoral Commission, INEC”

Attached to the tweet is a link containing the full details of the flooding and the statement credited to Mahmoud Yakubu, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman.

Claim: INEC said flooding has affected 4000 BVAS machines in Edo State

Verification:

On July 1st, 2024, the INEC chairman, Mahmoud Yakubu, while granting interviews to newsmen said “Over 4,000 machines were affected. We deployed our technical staff, we have already recovered over 3,500 of those machines and since this is an off-cycle election, if we are not able to recover the machines for Edo State, we will call for additional support from neighbouring states.”

The INEC chairman made the remarks on the sideline of the induction of 10 new Resident Electoral Commissioners (REC) and a retreat for the old and new Resident Electoral Commissioners. He added that the flooding will not affect the upcoming governorship election in Edo State slated for September 21, 2024.

Verdict: TRUE

The CDD War Room found the interview granted by the INEC chairman where he revealed that over 4,000 BVAS machines were affected in the flooding that ravaged some parts of Edo State. He however assured that 3,500 of the affected BVAS machines have been recovered and if there is a need for more, the commission will request additional ones from neighbouring states.
