An X account known as Edo X Community recently shared a video clip that allegedly shows the Edo State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Emperor Jarrett Tenebe, stating why the people of Edo State could no longer watch national news stations. This is amid the heated political campaigns leading up to the September 21 Edo gubernatorial election.
The X account reacted to the interview clip from Arise News, tweeting, “Truth is Monday Opkebholo is unintelligent and doesn’t want to face media embarrassment. But saying we in Edo state can’t afford light to watch Arise TV isn’t completely false. It was good optics to defend a clueless and low-grade bulala (Tilumbu).”
Claim: Edo APC Chairman, Emperor Tenebe said Edo people couldn’t afford electricity to watch Arise News
Verification
An analysis of the interview by CDD War Room reveals that the claim is misleading.
In the interview aired by Arise News, Tenebe was responding to allegations that his party’s candidate, Monday Opkebholo, was avoiding media interviews to discuss his gubernatorial bid. Tenebe claimed that economic conditions under the current Obaseki administration had worsened, leading to a situation where residents of Edo, including himself, could no longer afford cable TV subscriptions.
Even though Tenebe made a misleading argument that everybody in Edo state has become poor, he noted that the economic hardships no longer make cable and internet subscriptions affordable.
Verdict: MISLEADING
In the interview aired by Arise News, Tenebe did not say that Edo people couldn’t afford electricity to watch national news stations. His argument was to counter the allegation that Edo APC candidate was avoiding media interviews, focused on the unaffordability of cable and internet subscriptions as a result of the economic conditions in the State.
