On February 13, 2023, multiple Twitter users claimed Adamu Garba, an APC supporter and member of the Tinubu/Shetima Grassroots Independent Campaign Council, has denounced his membership of the party.
Some of the posts further claimed that Garba was set to join the youth in support for the Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi, stating that the APC is “more of a cult than a political party”.
One Twitter user shared this tweet alongside a video of Adamu Garba renouncing his party.
“I believe that the party has drifted so much from the original beliefs of the foundation, to something more cynical undemocratic institution,” Garba is seen to have said.
This video has also been shared here on Tiktok.
Another Twitter user with the handle “PeterObi_Save Nigeria Group USA” (@PeterObiUSA) tweeted: “BREAKING Alert. APC PCC member and former aide to Buhari, Adamu garba @adamugarba has denounced his membership in the party stating that the party is more of a cult than a political party.”
“He is now looking to join the Nigerian Youths in support of #PeterObi and the Labour party. He regretted his past Bigotry and insults against the #ObidientMovement”. The same video was posted alongside the tweet.
Verification
A quick analysis of the video showed that the video is old, and was taken out of context with which it was originally posted.
On April 15, 2022, Garba tweeted that he “will be declaring to aspire for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria tomorrow 16 April 2022 insha Allahu. Let’s do this for our country, guys”.
He indeed declared to run for president, but could not raise the N100 million needed to pick the APC nomination form for presidential ticket. He claimed to have raised N83 million, then announced his decision to join the Young Progressives Party (YPP) where he contested the primaries of the party but lost.
We traced the original video and found that it was posted on May 11, 2022, Vanguard News on Facebook.
The original video, which is two minutes and 43 seconds long, was posted alongside the caption “VIDEO: Presidential aspirants, Adamu Garba resigns from APC”.
On July 12, 2022, Garba made another tweet announcing his return to the ruling party.
“Yes, I am fully back to APC. I could do more harm to my country, Nigeria if I did not support a combination of a great strategist and a great tactician on a single ticket,” he said.
“It is BAT/Hashim that should take over all polling units in Nigeria come 2023. RE-DECAMPED!” he tweeted. This was reported by Premium Times. He has since opposed the candidacy of Peter Obi of the Labour Party, and was caught to have shared a manipulated image of Obi.
Garba has also announced he has not left the APC. On Tuesday, he appeared on Channels TV to defend the candidate of the APC, Bola Tinubu.
Verdict
The claim by Peter Obi supporters that Adamu Garba has left the APC is false. Garba has not made any official statement of his support for The Labour Party Candidate. The video making the rounds was shared as far back as May 2022.
