FACT CHECK: No, Peter Obi did not lead protest in Abuja as claimed in video

A video suggesting that Peter Obi, a former Labour Party presidential candidate was leading the #EndbadGovernance protest has gone viral. In the video, Obi could be seen addressing a crowd of protesters. CDD War Room tried verifying the claim.

Recall, the nation wide protests which began August 1, 2024 have garnered substantial media attention and have seen the peddling of disinformation and false narratives.

Verdict: FALSE

Verification:

Using reverse image searches, CDD found the video to have been online since June 2024.

The video was from a protest that happened after the Labour Party National Working committee meeting where the National Labour Congress protested outside the Labour party office.

In the video, Obi could be heard advising the protesters who had staged the protest against the party’s National Chairman, Mr Julius Abure, that “nobody here is more important than the others including me, we want the country (Nigeria) to work.”

Reacting to the recirculation of the video in a statement, the LP presidential candidate described it as a deliberate plan to blackmail him. He said the video “supposedly showing me leading a protest in Abuja, is also false. The video was actually taken during my visit to the Labour Party HQ, where I mediated a clash between the Labour Party and the NLC.

“The video was conveniently edited to create a false narrative, and those responsible have been paid to spread this misinformation. This kind of misinformation has no place in our democracy, where truth and honesty should prevail.

“This misrepresentation is part of a larger narrative of blackmail, aimed at fitting me into their malicious agenda. I remain committed to a new Nigeria where justice, equity, and caring for the citizens will prevail over the greed of a few.”
