FACT CHECK: Viral video claiming PDP using gas cylinders to buy votes is misleading

By Philip Clement

A video showing women who are seen carrying gas cylinders and singing is currently trending on social media, alongside claims that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is giving women gas cylinders as a way of buying their votes.

The video captions claim that the PDP is using gas cylinders as an alternative to cash to buy votes in the Feb 25, 2023 election, suggesting that PDP and politicians do not need cash to buy votes.

“PDP Gas cylinders souvenirs: Hope Emefiele now understands that politicians don’t actually need cash for vote buying,” one version of the video reads.

Verification

The CDD Election War Room analysed the video and found out that it first appeared on social media in March 2021, and does not show events in 2023.

Further checks showed that the said video emanated from the empowerment programme led by Uche Ekwunife, the senator representing Anambra Central at the senate.

She was reported to have donated gas cylinder stoves to 650 women across the state.

Verdict

The video is misleading and out of its original context; it does not show vote buying in 2023.
