FACT CHECK: Viral video does not show Tinubu supporters burning Igbo shops in Lagos

By Aishah Saleeman

A video has been circulating on Twitter from numerous users alongside claims that it shows supporters of Bola Tinubu burning shops owned by Igbos in Lagos.

Bola Tinubu is the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 presidential election, who recently lost the vote in Lagos to Peter Obi of the Labour Party.

One Twitter user shared the video alongside the caption: “Ladipo Market in Lagos State on fire as TINUBU Supporters Attack South East Lagos residents because they Voted for @PeterObi as Tinubu #LOST Lagos Presidential Election to @NgLabour

Many more users have shared the same video on Twitter and Facebook.

In the video, a male voice is heard lamenting about a fire outbreak in a certain area in Lagos state.

Verification

We analysed the video to find out if it is true and recent and found it to be an old video.

In the video, we heard the male voice saying this was on February 26, 2022. This suggests that the fire outbreak happened sometime in 2022.

If that is the case, the video was made a day after the fire outbreak happened at the Ladipo market in 2022.

To confirm this, we searched for fire outbreaks around that time in 2022, and we found reports of a midnight fire gutted the Aguiyi Ironsi Plaza in the popular spare parts market in the Ladipo area of Lagos State.

BBC reported that the fire outbreak happened late on Friday, February 25, 2022 which led to the loss of goods worth millions of naira.

Verdict

The evidence suggests that the video is an old video from a fire outbreak in the Ladipo area of Lagos state sometime in 2022, and has nothing to do with the 2023 presidential elections.
